Founded in the heart of Marseille in 1894, La Savonnerie du Midi is one of the last remaining historic soap factories preserving the authentic craftsmanship of traditional Marseille soap. Located in the Aygalades district, at the foot of the Carmes Valley, this factory has been dedicated to excellence for over 120 years.
With a passionate team of around twenty artisans, La Savonnerie du Midi is now part of Compagnie du Midi, acquired in 2013 by PRODEF, a French family-owned company specializing in eco-friendly hygiene and cleaning products.
A Journey Through Time
1894 – The Beginning
The soap factory was founded in Marseille’s 14th arrondissement, producing and marketing four distinct soap brands:
La Corvette – a brand that continues to honor Marseille’s maritime heritage with its iconic navy blue logo.
L’Aigle Blanc & La Branche d’Olivier – household soaps crafted with expertise.
Aubépine – a delicately scented soap line.
Post-WWII – Expansion & Innovation
After 1945, the factory relocated to its current site in the 15th arrondissement of Marseille, enhancing its traditional cauldron-based soap-making process with cutting-edge innovations of the time.
By 1971, skilled artisans were producing 300 tonnes of soap per month, with 80% of production exported worldwide.
2013 – A New Era with PRODEF
The Fiévet family, through their company PRODEF, took over the soap factory, reinforcing its commitment to traditional yet eco-conscious soap-making. A major renovation plan followed, modernizing production facilities while preserving the brand’s artisanal heritage.
2018 – A Living Tradition Opens to the Public
Following a successful renovation, La Savonnerie du Midi opened its doors to visitors, allowing them to witness firsthand the artistry behind genuine Marseille soap.
2020 – Recognized for Excellence
The brand’s dedication to tradition and innovation was honored with the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage Company) label, celebrating its expertise and deep-rooted history.
La Savonnerie du Midi also proudly signed the PaQte (Pact for Business Inclusion), contributing to the economic and social development of priority neighborhoods in Marseille.
2021 – Modernization & Growth
Supported by regional and national funding through the Recovery Plan, the factory expanded and upgraded its production lines. This investment enhanced its ability to transform raw soap from cauldrons into the iconic Marseille soap cubes beloved by customers worldwide.
2022 – A Cultural and Tourist Destination
The Musée de la Savonnerie du Midi, dedicated to sharing the brand’s soap-making heritage, was awarded the prestigious QUALITÉ TOURISME label, meeting an impressive 92% of excellence criteria.
2024 – 130 Years of Excellence
In 2024, La Savonnerie du Midi proudly celebrated 130 years of craftsmanship, tradition, and dedication to authentic Marseille soap-making. This milestone marks over a century of passion, innovation, and commitment to preserving a rich heritage.
